Cultural Analysis In The Modern Age….

‘Uh yeah he was the king of pop and he danced better than Madonna and Fred Astaire I’m on the bus he was better than Elvis and he lived in a bubble wrap palace called nevermind with a whoop of bonobos and one was called blubbers and he used to have a strong bond with him yeah brooke bond ha ha ha and sometimes the other monkies would throw bananas at him because he had a skin complaint that made him cut his own nose off and take children to see disco dancing puppies in sergeant pepper jackets and his brothers got jealous and his dad Joe told him off coz coz coz what not the bold bloke who sounded like Elvis Costello with a cold not the one who had a hit with it’s different for girls he used to whup him with a mic lead if he couldn’t match the godfather no not marlon brando james brown and then he invented everything that wasn’t invented before in music you know that period between morphing into a werewolf and saving the poor people of the world by crying repeatedly with one glove to mop the tears and macca said he loved him but actually he thinks he was a shit and he’ll be sorely missed especially now he’s such a big hit again isn’t it ironic no I couldn’t get a ticket they’ll be worth gold dust now is Prince still alive? I’m on the bus……..’

No Mikey Jackass remembrances here- yeah, Off The Wall is a great LP [Billie Jean aside ‘Thriller’ is so over rated it hurts, and the latter part of his canon is utter garbage], ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ is up there with any number of classic 45s and he could dance extremely well, but the sheer over the topness of the eulogising is pretty fricking sickening against the background of the man’s last 15-20 years.

So don’t watch that watch this….

FULL DUBLIN CASTLE LISTINGS

THURSDAY 2nd  JULY

VEIL CASSINI- Onstage 10.45pm

From Exeter, with driving bass and stuttering grunge guitars recalling Biffy Clyro. Rock a busy but tight sticksman and showcase a very English take on Fugazi ,with the more unhinged aspects of the Pixies, especially the vocal interplay which also harmonizes to lovely effect. Also marry grunge and West Coast as well as the Lemonheads ever did.

THE LIEUTENANT’S MISTRESS- Onstage 10pm

Easy on the ear poptabulous indie, jaunts along to the left of the middle of the road quite nicely, full of jingly guitar riffs. Very British, very charming, Sunday morning easy living stuff. Shades of New Order, maybe The Smiths.

1877- Onstage 9.15pm

Post punk meets Husker Du. Sonic Youth in there too...Joy Division in big servings and some post rocknessness...All good, brittle, shiny hard assed sound with experimental touches.

SHUFFLE- Onstage 8.30pm

The sexy mix of sampledelics, garagey pop tunes and boy/girl vocal interplay, all done with a swish finger poppin’ grooviness that embraces Hip Hop and jazz without ever being anything like either genres.

SATURDAY 4TH JULY

BODYFACE- Onstage 11pm

They call it ‘Creep Rock’ not sure why, sounds like powerpop a-la Weezer but with a harder (Nirvana-inspired) edge, vocalist Joseph Brennan is somewhat in the vein of a contemporary Ozzy, maybe that's the creep rock element…still,  we’re at the melodic side of post-grunge-sub-pop-metal. The New York act top off their European tour with tonite’s Independence Day special…

OLD SCHOOL TIE- Onstage 10.15pm

Excellent musicianship marks these boys out, as do their impassioned jazz tinged acid rock workouts and dance culture informed four to the floor passages. Intense shape shifting music somewhere between Talk Talk and Snow Patrol, but always original

PISTOLA KICKS- Onstage 9.30pm

The Coral via The Strokes via The Arctic Monkeys via Franz Ferdinand …Nice tunes featuring some wicked layered backing and main vocals and catchy choruses...Very radio friendly (not in a bad way though) Something reminds me of Hi-Fi too and even the Kooks...Indie pop to the bones as you can see...

 THE DECCAS- Onstage 8.45pm

Inspirals shaped 60s informed indie with an even more so Clint Boon swirling keyboard thang.  Got real good energy these Deccas, a bit Clashy, a bit Stone Roses,  a tad Julian Cope. Rousing and garagey, and stuffed fulla poptastic whistlability.  Nice. Let's also mention The Stranglers here…

THE HARD FOX- Onstage 8pm

Wibbly wobbly vocals and angsty acoustic based rock pop, Bowie must be an influence but then again Joy Division and Radiohead too. Then on 'The Crown' they turn into old school Fleetwood Mac -ish doods via 'Summer breeze' like guitar breaks. . Confused?. Maybe, but never mind the eclecticism, feel the width…....

Tonight's DJ with the party vibe is the one and only Fuzz Depraved

SUNDAY 5TH JULY THE JUNK FOOD SESSIONS PART 1

WHAT EVERY WOMAN WANTS- Onstage 10pm

Could this be the Scottish New Order? That kinda vibe….Aye, Everything’s Gone Gretna Green….

PETS IN HEAVEN- Onstage 9.15pm

Siouxsie Sue meets Bjork- see the sonic fur fly!

YEARS OF SALT AND RICE- Onstage 8.30pm

Could this be the Irish Sigur Ros? That kinda vibe….Er, no silly puns as it goes…

QUAINTWAYS- Onstage 7.45pm

A dose of some indie pop from the North west-side of England..Its charming, bright and breezy. Its fun, fun, fun… influences from Doves, Kinks and The Coral.
Followed by MDMA DJs til 2am –50s/60s rhythm n blues, soul and ska stompers and shakers coz Mondays Don’t Mean Anything…

FULL HOPE & ANCHOR LISTINGS

FRIDAY 3rd JULY

TOBACCO ROAD- Onstage 10.45pm

As the name suggests swinging 60s modernism is all the rage here with a hefty dose of Weller too. Spencer Davis Group, Small Faces, Prisoners, Mother Earth...and some nice McCartney flourishes . Really well done, good tunes.

PARAFERNALIA- Onstage 8.30pm

Chugging, frugging punk rock with girl singer…niftily old school in realization…'Eating pizza reading Nietzche' is a good line for starters..the girl singer rather reminds of Poly Styrene outta X Ray Spex, Then they get sort of Slits /ATV like, whistling, dubbiness, experimental edges agogo …. There's a very talented keys player in here too, who knows when just to shut up! On 'Let you go' they turn into Pink Floyd for girls!! An interesting setup…their list of influences on myswelling is a faultless hipster's good taste guide it must be said. Good band who seem to have tardised in from 1979…
Also appearing tonite ZOIDBERG and KAZOOEE

SATURDAY 4th  JULY

GAMBLING HEARTS- Onstage 10.pm

Britpop and slacker US styles merge beatifically with shades of Kasabian and maybe a bit of the Primals in they're rocks-off period, and lots of Teenage Fanclub like melodic charm.

BEAR ARMS- Onstage 9.15pm

Ex Von Edrich family troupe …ex Dustins Bar Mitzvah too for that matter... this is radio friendly pop with scuzzed up grungy guitars in  a spliffed up Weezer stylee with hooky sing a long choruses, pretty damn delectable.

Also appearing tonite LIZ IS EVIL and KILLJOYS

Thanks You Very Muches
